“Given how long the construction process can take and the amount you’re investing, I think that being a good communicator is the number one priority.”
What does your job involve on a daily basis?
Lots of communication between clients and suppliers/contractors. My background in sales and business development back in the UK, and training in carpentry here in Australia has been a great base for my role here at MILEHAM. As Site Manager, I run the day-to-day operation for various MILEHAM project sites across Sydney to ensure the right tradesmen, materials and tools are available when needed, and also oversee the quality of the work undertaken. I also perform a Project Manager role in gaining quotes from various suppliers for new projects, and setting up schedules and construction timelines for future projects.
What should customers look out for when choosing a trustworthy builder?
Given how long the construction process can take and the amount you’re investing, I think that being a good communicator is the number one priority. Choose a builder that makes you feel comfortable, and can answer any tough questions you throw at them. They should be honest with nothing to hide, and be able to layout the pros and cons of any aspect of your design. Find out how they plan to keep you up to date during the project.
What’s the most challenging project you’ve worked on – and how did you overcome the obstacles?
It’s always tough battling against mother nature. A recent project faced two months of straight rain, which put everyone behind. We had to work hard to get all of our suppliers and trades on board to commit to a new timeline, which involved a lot of compromises from all parties to ensure everyone was happy.
How do you think the construction industry will change in the next five years?
From a carpentry perspective, a lot has become digital, meaning you can carefully plan to the millimetre to minimise wastage for a more efficient and cost-effective project. Technology will continue to become more sophisticated to further streamline the industry. We currently use a program that our clients are linked in with, which allows them to receive project updates in real time and monitor what’s happing on site for their project.
The most memorable and enjoyable job you’ve worked on.
One of the projects I’m currently overseeing is construction of our Director’s new home on the Northern Beaches. There’s a real sense of pride being able to give back to the business, and it’s like working with family. They are living next door while it’s being built, and I love being greeted by their kids each morning!
Equally as rewarding, a renovation project I worked on in Normanhurst, which focused on making the home easier to move around for their disabled son. We built up a close relationship during the project, and the finished home really made life so much easier for the family.
What is your favourite place to visit in Sydney and why?
This may sound like a cliché, but coming from the UK, I absolutely love being on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. From the beachside houses to the whole vibe of oceanside living – it’s my idea of paradise!
