With its instantly recognisable design, the California Bungalow continues to be one of the most in-demand architectural styles in Australia.
Invented by Page Brown in Southern California during the early 1890s, the distinct home gained popularity in Australia around 1913, adored for its traditional façade, wide eaves and idyllic verandas.
In the interwar period, Australia experienced a bungalow boom, with local architects putting their own regional spin on the design, such as the red brick in Melbourne and liver-coloured brick in Sydney.
“Given the similarities between the Australian and Californian climates, it makes sense that the California Bungalow really took off here,” James Pilcher, Principal Architect of MILEHAM, said.
“They suit our somewhat dramatic climate and need for thermal conductivity, with our hot sun, heavy rainfall and sometimes gusty winds.”
Typically found on large, wide blocks in prime suburban pockets – making them particularly desirable among families – bungalows are highly regarded for their renovation appeal.
“Their double brick construction means they are strong enough to support upper storey additions or rear extensions without having to undertake major internal support works, which can be very costly,” Mr Pilcher said.
“The understated traditional elements also mean a California Bungalow won’t ‘fight’ with the aesthetic of a contemporary extension or internal redesign.”
